Key concepts
- Fungi can reproduce sexually or asexually.
- Spores support reproduction and dispersal.
- Life cycles vary among fungal groups.
The lesson
Fungi reproduce through several mechanisms, including sexual and asexual spore production. Many mushroom-forming fungi produce spores in fruiting bodies, while other fungi reproduce without a mushroom.
A life-cycle diagram is a simplification. The stages present, mating system and structures depend on the fungal group. The date a mushroom appears records fruiting at that site, rather than the beginning of the entire organism.

Put it into practice
Compare two life-cycle diagrams in the reading. Identify one shared process and one structural difference.
Keep in mind
Fruiting records and observations of spores answer different biological questions.
