Ecology of Fungi / Lesson 01

Fungi and Soil Health

Place fungal observations within the larger soil community.

Key concepts

  • Soil supports many groups of organisms.
  • Fungi have diverse ecological roles.
  • Visible mushrooms are an incomplete sample.

The lesson

Soil biodiversity includes fungi, bacteria, animals and other organisms. Fungi may act as decomposers, plant associates or pathogens. Their presence needs ecological context; more visible mushrooms is not a universal soil-health score.

Record substrate, date, location and sampling effort when observing fungi. These details support comparisons, while soil properties and biological functions require additional measurements.

A moment to apply it

Put it into practice

Plan repeat visits to the same location. Keep the search area and observation time comparable and record recent weather as context.

Keep in mind

No causal relationship between fungi and cattle performance can be inferred from the observations in MycoIlm.

Educational material. Check the linked reading and distinguish general principles from evidence about a particular specimen or field site. Lessons do not establish edibility or causal effects on livestock performance.
