Economics of Fungi / Lesson 01

Fungi in Agriculture Systems

Separate ecological processes from measured agricultural value.

Key concepts

  • Soil biodiversity supports multiple functions.
  • Economic value needs a defined outcome.
  • Observational associations are not causal estimates.

The lesson

Soil organisms participate in processes relevant to agriculture, and fungi have diverse roles within that community. Connecting a process to financial value requires a defined outcome, a comparison and measured costs.

MycoIlm records sightings and optional contextual metrics. These records do not establish that fungi caused a change in cattle growth, pasture productivity or input efficiency. Weather, management and sampling can differ at the same time.

A moment to apply it

Put it into practice

Write a research question with a defined outcome and comparison group. List two factors, besides fungi, that could influence that outcome.

Keep in mind

Keep observations descriptive until an appropriate study supports a causal or financial conclusion.

Educational material. Check the linked reading and distinguish general principles from evidence about a particular specimen or field site. Lessons do not establish edibility or causal effects on livestock performance.
