Economics of Fungi / Lesson 02

Soil Health, Yield and Economic Evidence

Identify the measurements needed before connecting soil observations to financial outcomes.

Key concepts

  • Yield and revenue are different quantities.
  • Costs and time horizons matter.
  • Uncertainty should remain visible.

The lesson

A financial comparison needs measured production, prices, costs and a time period. A soil observation supplies context, but cannot substitute for those quantities.

Co-occurring changes in fungal sightings and production may generate a research question. They do not show a treatment effect. The Academy and pasture summaries provide no return-on-investment forecast and no recommendation to alter livestock management.

A moment to apply it

Put it into practice

Create a blank comparison table for two periods with columns for production, price, costs, weather and sampling effort. Mark missing values as unknown.

Keep in mind

An explicit evidence gap is more useful than a confident financial claim without supporting measurements.

Educational material. Check the linked reading and distinguish general principles from evidence about a particular specimen or field site. Lessons do not establish edibility or causal effects on livestock performance.
